COVER LETTERS

STOP WRITING BORING COVER LETTERS

The way you write a cover letter can make or break your chances of getting that interview call. But don’t stress, I’m here to make sure you don’t mess it up.

NAIL THE BASICS

Writing a killer cover letter that gets you noticed is easier than it looks. Because every great cover letter includes these key things:

  • Job title and reference number: State the role you’re applying for upfront. And if there’s a reference number, toss that in too.
  • Why you want the job: No half-baked ‘I need the money’ vibes here. Explain why this role speaks to you and why you’d be an ideal fit.
  • Research and tailor: Prove you’ve done more than skim their website. Show you understand the company’s mission and culture by tailoring your letter accordingly.
  • Self-love: Highlight your skills, experience and wins. Focus on what matters to the role. Remember how we talked about ‘humblebragging’ on LinkedIn? Well, here, just straight up brag.
  • Excitement: If you’re not hyped about the job, why should they be hyped about hiring you? Let your excitement shine through!
  • Clear, concise writing: Keep your writing sharp, concise and simple. We’re talking plain English – which means ditch the corporate waffle and buzzwords. Make it human and conversational. And make it easy to read with 10–12-point font and wide margins.
  • Call to action: End strong. Encourage them to check out your resume and get in touch.

AND IF YOU’RE COMING IN COLD?

So, you want to send a cover letter to an organisation that’s not formally advertising a role. Some may call that desperate – but I call it ambitious. Respect.

That said, you still need to keep it brief but impactful – ensuring you hit 3 key criteria:

  • Who you are: Mention what you’re doing now (what course you’re studying, where you’re working and so on).
  • Your edge: Tell them about your skills, experience and that extra something that makes you stand out.
  • Why you want to work for that company: This is your chance to make it as specific and personal to the employer as possible. Make them feel special!
